About the House

Alastair Allanach has been able to give us the following information. John Murray’s ‘A History of the Royal High School’ reports that the boarding house was in operation between 1927 and 1970. Also in ‘The Tounis Scule’ by J. B. Barclay there are a few paragraphs about the house on pages 69-70. We will try to include extracts in future.

Robin Boog has told us that when he was in the house in 1963 it was a 13 Royal Terrace. Sandy Ewart, who was then in P6, has said he had one year in the old house, 24 Royal Terrace which would suggest that the move to number 13 took place in 1961..

We can only assume that the house was 24 Royal Terrace form 1927 to 1961.

Then there were the housemasters. There must have been quite a few over the years. The most memorable for the former house members still around must be Bob Ironside and his wife Elmer. Bob taught Latin at school and was rather a formidable character. Bob and Elmer had no children and tried to keep in touch with the boys after they had left the school.

The other full time member of the team was Miss Darling who was responsible for the catering in the house.

If any former boarders have any information about which house they were in on what dates then please let us know
