About Boarding

If you are a visitor to this site, who was not a boarder, we will try to describe the purpose of the ‘house’ and an insight into the day-to-day routine of life in the boarding house.

Royal Terrace

The Royal High School Boarding House was provided to allow parents, not resident in Edinburgh, to send their sons to the Royal High School. Some boys with parents living nearby were able to go home for weekends but most boys remained in the boarding house at weekends going home for mid-term and end of term breaks.

The current description is based on the time that the boarding house, known to the boarders as ‘the house’ was located at 24 Royal Terrace as shown in the photograph above. Royal Terrace is a continuation round from Regent Terrace to Carlton Terrace and into Royal Terrace. It was very handy and within easy walking distance to the school,

There were also boys from the Junior School and they had a tougher life because they had to catch public transport to and from school with the older boys looking after the younger ones.

We will now look at a number of aspects of life in ‘the house’.
